We who enjoy our beautiful community are truly blessed. It’s not only the beauty of the mountains and the wonderful climate, it is friends we make here and the wonderful welcoming local people that we should be thankful for.
Unfortunately, Yancey County is one of the poorest counties in North Carolina. Twenty seven percent of the children of of Yancey live in severe poverty. They don’t get regular nutritious food and appropriate clothing.
We propose to help alleviate this problem of child poverty in this county. To that end we have formed a charitable corporation, Mt Mitchell Community Fund. We have applied for and received our 501(c) 3 status.
Our neighbors on the other side of Mt Mitchell, Mountain Air, have established a very successful similar program. This year they contributed almost $100,000 to local charities of their choice. Quite an accomplishment. Hopefully we can achieve similar results as our program matures.
Our first program will be providing winter coats next fall to needy children through the school system.
We hope, and believe, we of this community can make a difference in the lives of local children. We will be asking for contributions and volunteers in the near future and ask that we all participate. We would be pleased to hear from you if you have questions or suggestions.
The Mt. Mitchell Community Fund Board, thanks you in advance of your support.
