Those of us residing in our beautiful community are truly blessed. It’s not only the beauty of the mountains and the wonderful climate, it is the friends we make here and the wonderful welcoming local people that we are thankful for.
Yancey County is one of the poorest counties in North Carolina where over 25% of the children live in poverty. Unfortunately they don’t get the regular nutritious food and appropriate clothing.
We are working to help alleviate this problem through Mt Mitchell Community Fund, a 501C3 Charity domiciled in Yancey County. MMCF is addressing winter clothing needs through the Yancey County School System by providing coats, leggings, sweat shirts, and other winter clothing as well as appropriate footwear. To address food and nutrition we support Yancey County Feed A Child. And we have partnered with Blossman Gas to underwrite Financial literacy classes and job/career related field trips.
Helene brought unexpected devastation to western Carolina and Yancey County was not spared. MMCF recognized the need to step up and help recover and rebuild our ravaged communities. The response demonstrated that we had acted wisely. Individuals and churches across several states have been generous with their support and the board has demonstrated good stewardship as we assist families to survive, to recover and to rebuild.
We hope, and believe, we of this community can make a difference in the lives of local children. We will be asking for contributions and volunteers in the near future and ask that we all participate. We would be pleased to hear from you if you have questions or suggestions.
The Mt. Mitchell Community Fund Board, thanks you in advance of your support.
