A Big Thank You and a pat on the back to all who organized, supported, worked and attended our recent Kosmos & Kuisine evening at Mt Mitchell Clubhouse. Attendance was all we could have hoped for, with a complete sell out of available seats. The silent auction exceeded our expectations and the raffles were very popular and highly profitable. Having the community come together as it did demonstrates the love we all share with Yancey county and the entire Mt Mitchell, South Toe River area. The financial results of the event, when combined with the generous gifts of many received over the past year, has positioned the Mt Mitchell Community Fund to fully fund the Koats for Kids project, and to fund other needs of the children and youth of Yancey County. One such need, is the South Toe Elementary, back to school Back Pack project which the fund has already committed to.Thanks again to each of you. Moving forward, working and sharing together,we can help make a real difference in the lives of the children and youth,of Yancey County.
Mt. Mitchell Community Fund, established by our community to address the needs of children and youth of Yancey County, recently completed a much-needed contribution – with the very generous support of our MMCF members – a gift of 500 new warm coats and hoodies as well as several hundred pairs of leggings to all eight of the schools in Yancey County. This was accomplished by working closely with the Superintendent of Schools, staff and principals of all the schools. Please take a moment to review the pictures below:
MMCF just made a gift of $6,000 to Feed A Child. Additional gifts are currently being considered. Below is a picture of board members Dick Adams, William and Tina Morgan presenting the check to Feed A Child.
MMCF also made a gift to South Toe Elementary School’s Back to School supplies initiative and to Feed A Child. Additional gifts are currently being considered. Below is the newspaper article describing the donation to Robert Wyatt of Feed A Child.

When the board of directors met with the superintendent of Yancey County schools she was asked what were the children’s needs. She responded food, winter coats, shoes and eyeglasses. The board determined that its first project would be winter coats for next year. The thought of small children without proper winter coats in these mountains is very disturbing.
The plan is to buy winter coats from the wholesale market in the spring after the price has gone down and distribute them through the school system. We have also we ask for used, serviceable children’s coats from the public. The number of coats and the number of schools that we can service depends on contributions that we receive.
The superintendent told the directors that the Burnsville elementary school and the Micaville elementary school were in more need than the others. So we intend to concentrate on those schools first. The board believes we will need $30,000 to buy coats in the spring for all of the impoverished kids in the school system to receive winter coats. If we do not raise that much then we will scale back our effort to serve as many schools as our money will allow. So, we ask that each of you contribute money to help with the effort. We really volunteers to help. We need you!
Please help.
